Absinthe campaigns support three distinct currency types that you can brand, name, and configure to shape how incentives are distributed and perceived. Each currency serves a different role in your incentive economy, and using multiple currencies is strongly recommended to separate scale, value, and scarcity. You can configure currencies under: Campaign Sidebar → Gamification → Currencies XP is enabled by default. Gold and Gems can be toggled on as needed.

XP-type (Inflationary Engagement Currency)

XP is the default currency for all campaigns and is designed to be high-volume and inflationary. It is not intended to have on-chain representation. XP is best suited for activities where participation volume matters more than strict supply control, including:
  • Social interactions
  • User-generated content
  • Referral bonuses
  • Daily check-ins
  • Broad engagement mechanics that scale with user count
XP allows campaign managers to reward activity freely without worrying about diluting a scarce reward pool.

Gold-type (Tokenizable Value Currency)

Gold is a value-bearing currency that can be tokenized and traded on-chain via Voucher Protocol. When enabled, Gold allows users to convert earned points into on-chain vouchers that are liquid and instantly sellable. This introduces a secondary market for incentives and attracts both time-rich and capital-rich participants. Gold is ideal for:
  • High-signal behaviors
  • Financially meaningful actions
  • Campaigns that benefit from speculative participation and liquidity
Important: If you enable the Gold currency, you must also configure a maximum supply under the Tokenization tab before tokenization is allowed. This supply cap defines the upper bound of on-chain issuance. Before enabling Gold, ensure you understand the regulatory and compliance implications of issuing tokenized incentives in your jurisdiction. See the Tokenization documentation for full details.

Gems-type (Scarce Off-Chain Currency)

Gems are a scarce, off-chain currency that cannot be tokenized. They are typically used to reward the most meaningful or revenue-driving behaviors, where strict control over distribution is required. Unlike XP, Gems are intentionally limited, and unlike Gold, they are not exposed to secondary market dynamics. Common use cases include:
  • On-chain trading or liquidity activity that generates fees
  • Deep product engagement
  • Advanced progression milestones
  • Gating access to exclusive rewards or experiences
Gems act as a control layer in your incentive design.

Enabling and configuring currencies

  • XP is always enabled and cannot be disabled
  • Gold and Gems can be toggled on or off per campaign
  • Gold requires additional setup under Tokenization, including a max supply, before it can be made tradable

Designing with multiple currencies

Each currency exists to solve a different problem:
  • XP scales participation
  • Gold creates liquid, tradable value
  • Gems enforce scarcity and signal importance
By combining currencies, Absinthe lets you reward broadly, incentivize deeply, and preserve long-term integrity of your incentive economy, without forcing every action into a single, overloaded reward type.
